Conflagration

I had the opportunity to be indelicate
The clash of you and me was without precedent
Prior to the mark on you I brawled with hesitance
You flashed your dark side too and I've had no regret since
I brought a thumb tack to a sword fight
Yah I was bound to lose but somehow I survived
Thrown to the lions I stashed cat nip in my cheek
Ready to spit out on you, just as they were unleashed
The earth spins around again, a consolation for the meek
Vengeance ain’t mine but just this time I’ll play the thief
I brought a shotgun to your roulette game
Had I a cylinder to spin, it would have ended just the same
I know what you want, because I can read your tell
You can only hide the truth, with a sound lie to yourself
Chaos is parent to both death and life as well
So roll the dice and see, which way you are impelled
I brought a love note to an open mic
For my part I’m set to start my journey back tonight
Can you blame the parched for their unquenchable thirst?
You'd want sympathy too if the roles were reversed
It takes feats of strength to place someone else first
To pass the canteen on, to do so unrehearsed
Who locked the rooster with the hens all night?
And what would anyone expect when they collide?
Who brought these chicks to the cockfight?
If blood is bound to spill, best make it justified

On The Line

She never called him by his first name
For the eight months they ran on
She just said, “Boy, come over”
When she called him up at all
But to him she was an angel
That had fallen from the clouds
It was his dumb luck that he looked straight up
As she nose-dived to the ground
A man who’s served learns patience
With time enough to kill
For weeks he’d wait like a coiled snake
For a word from her, or the rumor mill
‘Cuz she could slip away like whiskey
On a full moon summer’s eve
Come back around in a nearby town
Half a deck tucked up her sleeve
He never saw the sun play on her hair
‘Cuz the nights were all they had
But when she called he ran to her
And in the morning she’d be gone
Doubled down on a hard luck hand
Her voice Miami black strap
Lips Tennessee mash
Sweet nothing whispered sour
Just wind blowing dust over her tracks
See, trouble’s just like kindness
On a coast swept worry clear
Duty bound, when your guard is down
To give its head a defiant rear
He heard a snicker in the background
When they put her on the line
She said, “Boy, come over”
Like she was running out of time
“Now it can’t be a gamble,
If I’m already broke
If I’m running out on my bar tab
What does it matter how much I owe?”
Tearing through the tree-lined backroads
The radio claimed Delia gone
He reminisced on her last kiss
As the pines blinked off and on
He never saw the sun play on her hair
‘Cuz the nights were all they had
But when she called he ran to her
And in the morning it was done
Doubled down and drawing dead

Vigilante Sugar Daddy

Gather round now, all you little birds
Curl up under my wing, the more the merrier
Sanctuary, shelter, a place to ride the storm
When the sky threatens to fall, come ring my alarm
So here’s the deal
Here’s what I offer, I can foot the bill
I’m redefining justice
My methods can be trusted
Attitudes adjusted at will
Pay attention, I’ve got nothing to sell
My services are free, I just can’t help myself
There will be problems, there will be pain
But there will never be reason to complain
Not while I’m here
I will still be standing when the smoke finally clears
I’m the man who you can turn to
If someone has done you wrong
Bring it all home to me
Need no instruction
Or detailed discussion
All repercussion-free
What’s in it for me you ask, that story is long
Let’s just say for many years I was in the wrong
Treated some unfairly, vowed to set it straight
Put my talents to good use, aimed right at those mistakes
To make amends
Teardrops tattooed upon the hands I now extend
Vigilante sugar daddy
Point me in the right direction
I will be discreet
A self-imposed penance
Of practicing vengeance
My unique tendencies
Violence solves little, I concede
I’ve nothing else to provide, but I make this guarantee
No one sees me coming, no one sees me leave
A battered calling card left for all who’ve been aggrieved
Make no mistake
No time for change of mind once I am engaged

Creatio Ex Nihilo

The world was full - No more babies
Capacity reached - No ifs or maybes
The guest list erased - No VIPs
No exceptions - No thank you ladies
The old urban warfare rule - Never take a dead man's shoes
Did not apply to you - Try walking a mile or two
“Ask your doctor this: how to make the shoe fit”
Big pharma claimed innocence
Same as any citizen
Withdrawing what was first put in
Plus a little interest
An obstetrics data mine
Any metrics they could find
The end of all genetic lines
Tell me the story one more time, mama
“May increase your risk of bleeding from the wrist”
Then appeared an ancient man
Fifferent from the rest of them
His own seed unpatented
The world began to grow again.
“Ask your doctor this: how to make the shoe fit”

Honey, What Do You Think
04:05
|
|||
Honey, what do you think about that?
Honey, what do you think about that?
We're gonna go for a ride in a Cadillac
A limousine, all long and black
Honey, what do you think about that?
As pretty as the first time that we met
As pretty now as ever I confess
Laid out in your snow white dress
I’m putting on my Sunday best
As pretty now as ever I confess
I’m bringing you some flowers for the road
Bringing you some flowers for the road
Pink carnations and a blood red rose
Little white lilies like the lies you told
Bringing you some flowers for the road
Baby, they're warming up the car
Baby, they're warming up the car
I'll bring along my old guitar
To help me say my au revoir
Baby, they're warming up the car
Let me play you off to rest
Let me play you off to sleep, my pet
My hand wraps sweetly round the neck
I’ll squeeze the chords, honey, don’t you fret
Let me play you off to rest
It’s time for me to move on alone
It’s time for me to ride on alone
I’ll take you partway down the road
To your green grass and polished stone
Then it’s time for me to move on alone
Honey, what do you think about that?
Honey, what do you think about that?
We're gonna go for a ride in a Cadillac
Me up front, you in the back
Honey, what do you think about that?
Honey, what do you think about that?

Tally Man

When I was just a kid I counted toes & fingers
Later I moved on to certain facts and figures
Collected coins, like all the other boys
But I lost ‘em playing doctor with the babysitter
That’s when I headed in a new direction
Started adding tramp to my stamp collection
While I was at it, became highly arithmetic
Keeping accurate tab to help avoid detection
I count ‘em off, I do the one two three four
I've had enough, I don't need any more
I'm mighty glad for all the loving that I've had
But it don’t add up to very much,
It’s getting hard to keep score
Crunching the numbers carved into those bedposts
One for every wild organic whole grain oat sown
I can’t sleep, what I’m counting isn’t sheep
This aggregating’s overrated, I just want to go home
No man’s nomadic like a tabulator
Hunted and gathered all this bad behavior
What the hell, all these notches in my belt
Aint gonna help me keep my pants up when I’m old and out of favour
One two three four five - Six seven eight nine
Some nights I had to tally more than that at one time
Maybe there’s still potential - The numbers exponential
Every little increment is on my mind
If I’m a snake, then I’m the blackest adder
I cumulate, I calculate, I do the math for
With every win, a butterfly is pinned
But this obsession with collecting keeps me sneaking out the back door
Is someone out there who my wiles can’t confound?
A full three sixty degree life turnaround
And if she asked, how many in my past
I’d say, “Only you, any before just don’t count.”
Ten, twenty, thirty, forty - Dear Penthouse Forum stories
Only in it for the glory of the inventory
Maybe there’s still potential - The numbers exponential
Every little increment is on my mind
I count ‘em off, I do the one two three four
I've had enough, I don't want any more
I'm thankful for, all the women, lord
But I only wanted one, I swear I'd never ever leave her
Tally Man, whoo hoo hoo, Tally Man

So Many Unicorns
03:34
|
|
||
Sarah finds solace every third or fourth weekend
The gang behind the bar watch the drama unfold
Won't give the time to the guys when the sky is illumined
But something vaguely lunar tugs the tide in her bones
Right around midnight
She clears up her bill
Spins her frown upright
She moves in for the kill
A home and a family, a mom and daddy
So many unicorns
The stories they tell at Foster Care-ousels
Served her oh so well
Now what was all that for?
Are you having fun
With your conquests
Are you tidying up
Or relocating the mess?
Oh, the flesh is cursed, but it could be much worse
It doesn't really hurt for her to dance
Some men drop like leaves, others so naive
Make themselves believe in the performance
From their mammas torn, forever uninformed
She grabs them by the horn for 8 second rides
Like a wetsuit worn, every unicorn
After a thunderstorm, should be left out to dry

Postdiluvian Postmortem

Think I made a mess of it, this one
Won't come out in the wash
A problem with the press kit, written
By an army of lesser gods
No ink is indelible
After a 40 day rinse
You're so evangelical
So eager to convince
Everybody needs to speak
Babble on if you please
Is inspiration divine when
Under the influence?
The whole is only as holy
As the least constituents
Misquoted at length on evil
No one was supposed to drown
Think I made a mess of it, people
This one won’t wash out
You’ll be fine without me here
We got off to a rocky start
As the oceans disappear
You only hear what you want
A character assassination
One helluva hatchet job
Never could fit in your alphabet
So seek me in the stars
